What is Jamboree?
Over 50 years ago, a group of civic-minded leaders came together with a shared dream – to create a special celebration for the community they loved. That dream became the Smithville Jamboree, and what started as a vision to bring people together has grown into something truly extraordinary. In the beginning, Jamboree took place on the streets of what we now call Main Street in downtown Smithville. There were food vendors, street dances, jelly and jam contests, bread-making, and booths for everything from watermelon to chicken. The community gathered, laughed, and made memories. Over time, Jamboree found its forever home at Riverbend Park, and though its location may have changed, its heart never has.

Throughout the years, countless people have poured their time, energy, and love into making Jamboree what it is today. Leaders like Max Jones, who chaired in 1969, alongside others like Charles Ebner, Mr. and Mrs. George Mick, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Scheler, and Karen and Allan Bell, all helped shape this cherished tradition. Their dedication reminds us of the spirit of community that continues to shine through every Jamboree.

While much has evolved over the past five decades, one thing has remained constant—the heart and soul of Jamboree. It’s still fueled by the passion and commitment of volunteers who share one simple goal: to give back to the community we love. Under the leadership of our current president, Tammy Schroeder, a group of selfless individuals works tirelessly to ensure that Jamboree not only brings joy once a year but also supports the community throughout the year. Thanks to their efforts, we’re able to provide scholarships and donate to local organizations like Smithville booster clubs, Bastrop County Go-Texan, Friends of the Library, Project Graduation, Smithville Little League, Smithville Volunteer Fire Department, Smithville High School Robotics Team, Relay for Life and many more. We’ve also helped improve Riverbend Park, including the facilities at Chuck Wagon Square—an investment in the community space that brings us all together.

At its core, the Jamboree Committee is about more than a once-a-year event. It’s about coming together to celebrate our roots, our friendships, and the ties that make Smithville special. It’s about giving back to the people and organizations that do so much for our town. Yes, it takes dedication and hard work, but knowing that we’re making a difference, especially through the scholarships we provide, makes every bit of effort worth it.

If you’d like to be part of something bigger, to give back and make new memories, we’d love for you to join us. Our monthly meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Smithville Rec Center, and everyone is welcome.

Let’s keep the tradition going, and as always, the Critter says, “Y’all Come!”
